Postpartum & Parenting

The early months and years of parenthood can feel overwhelming, isolating, or very different from what you expected. Alongside moments of connection and joy, you might be experiencing postnatal depression, anxiety, intrusive thoughts, difficulty bonding with your baby, or intense feelings like rage or emptiness. You may feel disconnected from yourself, your partner, or your previous life. These experiences are more common than many people realise, and support is available.

Understanding Matrescence

Becoming a parent is one of life's most profound transitions, what researchers call matrescence. This involves physical, psychological, social and spiritual transformation. Your identity shifts, relationships change and feelings from your own early experiences may surface. The person you were before doesn't disappear, but integrating motherhood with all the other parts of yourself takes time and often requires support.

Through therapy, we can create space to explore the full complexity of your experience - the ambivalence, the grief for what's been lost, the difficulty and the connection. Working at a pace that feels right for you, we can attend to what needs attention, whether that's processing your birth, understanding postnatal depression or anxiety, working through difficulty bonding with your baby, or simply making sense of this enormous change. I worked for two years in NHS perinatal mental health services and understand how to hold the intensity of early parenthood.
