Birth Trauma
Birth trauma affects up to 1 in 3 people who give birth. Trauma can result from what happened during labour: emergency interventions, lack of control, or feeling unheard, or from how you feel emotionally afterwards. You may have hoped for one experience and been left in shock, disbelief, or deep disappointment. You might be experiencing flashbacks, intrusive thoughts, feelings of failure, anger, or finding yourself reliving the experience repeatedly. These responses are not a sign of weakness; they're normal reactions to a traumatic event.
Processing Birth Trauma
Birth trauma can have lasting effects on your wellbeing, your sense of yourself, and your relationships - including with your baby. Working through trauma requires safety, time and the right support. Through trauma-informed therapy, we can gently process what happened at a pace that feels manageable for you.
Birth can reveal difficult truths about control, vulnerability and how we're treated at our most exposed. It can also surface earlier experiences or traumas. I'm here to help you make sense of what happened, understand your responses and find a path towards integration and healing. This isn't about moving on quickly or "getting over it" it's about tending to the impact, acknowledging what you've been through, and supporting you to find your way forward. I worked for two years in NHS perinatal mental health services, including with women who experienced traumatic births, and understand how to hold this work safely.
